Elena Caetano Álvarez is Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Bristol and also works in Academic Engagement at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford. Having completed her PhD in 2021 at the University of Birmingham, her research focuses on medieval Iberian historiography, with particular attention to the construction of political authority and imperial narratives in thirteenth-century Castile. Her work on representations of Translatio Imperii in Alfonso X’s Estoria de Espanna, first developed during her doctoral studies, was later published as a monograph with the support of the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland / Spanish Embassy Publication Prize. The intellectual questions explored in this research continue to shape her contribution to DEGE, particularly its study of the Alfonsine historical tradition. As part of the DEGE project and its Universal Chronicles Worldwide team, Elena contributes to the study of the discursive and ideological uses of historical narrative in the Alfonsine scriptorium. Drawing on her expertise in the sister Alfonsine chronicle, the Estoria de Espanna, she brings to the project a broader understanding of the international intellectual contexts and receptions of Roman imperial ideas in medieval historiography. Alongside this research, Elena has long been involved in Digital Humanities initiatives, contributing to projects including the Estoria de Espanna Digital. Her interest in the dialogue between manuscript culture and digital scholarship led her to contribute to the development of the DEGE project’s General Estoria digital edition, where she now serves as coordinator of the project’s Digital Technologies team. In this role, she oversees the digital edition and develops collaborative, scriptorium-inspired workflows that challenge conventional understandings of what a digital edition is and can be.
